Today when we see towards cinema and youth, most of the percentage in comparison to previous time is taking participate to make their acting career. Daily we see new faces launch, but 55 years ago when acting was hardly taken as the career option, Roshan Taneja went to New York to get trained in acting at the Neighborhood Playhouse School of the Theatre.
The pioneer of acting school in Mumbai that trained so many legends that we see today, died on 10th of May, just after two months he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. At the age of 87, acting guru- Roshan Taneja left us, left the industry and his fellow students and ex-students alone.
He went for acting training because he wanted to become an actor, but his destiny wanted something else. So whenever he tried, he failed. “He returned to India hoping to become an actor. Fate never helped him on that front,” said Rohit Taneja, his son and a director of Roshan Taneja School.
Then after leaving the Film and Television Institute Of India (FTII) in Pune 1975, he founded his own acting school- Roshan Taneja School of Acting in Mumbai in 1976. And afterward, he trained some of the legends os the screen from Naseeruddin Shah, Jaya Bachchan, Shabana Azmi, Shatrughan Sinha, Subhash Ghai, Om Puri, Asrani and Mithun Chakraborty to Aamir KhanAjay Devgn, Anil Kapoor, Benjamin Gilani, Govinda, and Danny Denzongpa. And all these names become the star of the industry.
When he got to know that he was born here to train people about acting and for imparting the skills in them, he becomes a devotee to his profession then. He just wanted to teach as much as people he can.
Popular theatre and TV actor Rakesh Bedi, who was a student of Taneja’s last batch at FTII, called him the “first man who introduced formal training in acting” in India. Bedi said, “Like so many other actors, I owe him a lot. We had so many preconceived notions about acting. He taught us how to be a complete actor so that one can step into any role. His teaching method was fantastic. It was a mix of Konstantin Stanislavski and the New York school of acting.”
Rohit the son of Roshan Taneja remembers his father as a symbol of strength, emotions, patients and caring. Roshan Taneja was also very famous among his students for his strictness.
